Northern Gateway (SH1)

The Northern Gateway project was one of New Zealand’s largest and most challenging roading projects. It affected 7.5km of road and involved the construction of six major structures including a full diamond interchange at Orewa, eco-viaducts at Nukumea and Otanerua, twin bridges at Waiwera, an overbridge at Hillcrest and twin tunnels through Johnstone’s Hill. The Northern Gateway was the final stage of the realignment and extension of the Northern Motorway between Albany and Puhoi to the north of Auckland. The Northern Gateway allows state highway traffic to bypass Orewa, which eases traffic congestion and reduces delays for the public travelling between Auckland and Northland.
