Samoa – Right Hand Side switch and Signals upgrade

During 2009, ITS was commissioned by the Samoan Ministry of Works to assist in the implementation of the Road Traffic Ordinance switch from the right hand side (RHS) to the left hand side (LHS), thus accommodating right hand drive vehicles.

Due to the change in driving sides, the project required the modification and upgrade of 12 high volume signalised intersections in order to facilitate new driving behaviour and safety.

GHD was commissioned to design appropriate new layouts, and ITS undertook all physical works, which included the modification, upgrading and refurbishment of the existing signals, implement new roadmarkings and provide basic signal training to Samoan authorities. Due to the significantly sensitive nature of the alterations proposed within the project, it was imperative to conclude the project within an extremely tight time frame, and the programme called for full completion within 2 weeks of commencement.

ITS considers this an extremely successful project and was proud to be a part of such a historical change.
